Packing for a Winter Vacation

In just a few short days I will be taking my long awaited trip to Germany. I cannot wait but packing for this trip has been such a daunting task.  We will be spending 10 days there and I don’t even know what to pack.

grey2-1This trip is rather tricky because 1) its very long and 2) it’s a winter trip so there are more layers needed for the jaunts around the markets. Of course room for presents, souvenirs, and all the German candy I can fit in the cracks is definitely needed on the journey back. So I really need to keep what I bring to Germany light, which is probably the hardest thing for an over packer like myself (I carry 3 bags on a weekend trip home…).

When it comes to packing I think the most important thing to do is create a list (or in my case 5) this is really the best way to stay organized and make sure you don’t forget anything.  I’m so crazy I like to also organize my list.  I will make a list of just clothes needed, I also like to check the weather of the destination I’m going and make sure I’m prepared for what it’s going to be like.  For Germany I will definitely be packing quite a few sweaters to keep me nice and warm.

Then I create a list of toiletries and my carry on. As any slightly high maintenance girl I have a lot of products that I carry, so when traveling I make sure to downsize everything.  To save yourself some space grab travel size in all the necessities.  Ulta and Sephora even carry travel sizes of some of your favorite high end products so make sure to check there too!  and make up I want to bring, this list definitely is consolidated and I make sure I limit myself on beauty products.

grey7-1After I make my list I look it over and try to eliminate the “just in case” items.  I think if the item is only for a certain situation then they aren’t worth bringing along.  If you happen to need that umbrella or that second bikini odds are you can find one in a local store.
Just in case items, beauty products, and shoes might be the biggest wastes of space in your luggage. Shoes are also the biggest offender of the just in case rule.  Odds are you probably won’t wear those heels, or your running sneakers so just leave them behind.  I choose my shoes very strategically for a long tip by following a couple rules.

1. They shouldn’t be new shoes you’ve never worn.  Everyone knows walking in brand new shoes is practically torture.  2.  You should also skip the shoes that are worn out as well, you need the support and comfort while sight seeing. 3.  I like to try to keep my shoe options to a minimum of 3 pairs or comfortable and will go with any outfit I pack.

Keeping these easy tips in mind when packing will definitely keep you under weight and give you plenty of room for all the souvenirs from your trip.
