Drugstore Make up Starter Kit

I love makeup, as you can probably tell I am a girl who lives for new makeup products.  I love trying new techniques as well as new formulas and brands. But finding the right products can be so overwhelming wandering the beauty department looking for products that are worth their price can be a daunting task.  So today I created a list of some of my must haves when looking to start wearing makeup.

drug store primer

First, primer is very important.  This product keeps your foundation in place as well as fills in fine lines and makes your make up go on a lot smoother. There are two types of primers silicone and water based. Silicone based primer, this may feel slick on your skin and isn’t great if your skin is acne prone, or on the dryer side.  I personally like water based primers because I feel like they really moisturize my skin.  I think the Maybelline Baby Skin and the Rimmel Lasting Finish primers are great options if you’re looking for something that will make your make up last.

Now that you’ve prepped your skin the next step is foundation! Often times drug store foundations can be on the warmer side and have a pinker undertone.  I have a very neutral skin tone and it makes shopping for foundation very difficult. The only foundation I have found to date that comes the closest to matching my skin is the Loreal Infallible Pro Matte Foundation.  Infallible has beautiful medium to full coverage and has a really nice yellow-y undertone which looks nicer on my skin (I wear 105 Natural Beige and 106 Sun Beige).  I also really like the Fit Me foundation as an alternative, this is on the warmer side but has a similar wear to the Infallible.

now that you have a base of makeup going in and covering those imperfections is key.  My favorite concealer is the NYX HD Concealer.  I use this on my spots as well as under my eyes.  It has great coverage and lasts all day. I also have to mention the holy grail of so many beauty gurus.  I have heard nothing but praise for the Maybelline Instant Age Rewind.  This is the perfect concealer to cover dark circles and brighten under eyes.

If you don’t have naturally rosy cheeks blush is a must.  Personally I’m not a fan of creamed blushes, I think they are really hard to apply and don’t blend as easily.  My go to blush has to be the E.L.F. blushes.  They are so incredibly cheap and come in some beautiful neutral colors. I love the Twinkle Pink, it gives a great flush of color with a hint of sparkle.

I don’t often use powder (I’m the laziest makeup lover ever) but when I do the matching Infallible Pro Matte from Loreal is how I would set my makeup.  The formula of this make up is so beautiful and I love how matte the finish is.  I never get shiny all day.

If you’re like me I love the unruly bow look (Cara Delevigne is queen) but I do have some patchy places in my brows that need a little TLC. I have been obsessed with the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz pencil, it works so beautifully and matches my brows like no other, but it does come with a pretty hefty price tag.  So my suggestion for a great brow pencil would have to be NYX Micro brow pencil. They have created a formula and pencil design so close to the Anastasia for a fraction of the cost.

Moving on to eyes as you did with your face you need to also prime  your eyelids to keep your eyeshadow in place.  I use the NYX eyeshadow primer and it works great.

For eyeshadow if you’re just starting to wear shadows I would keep with a more neutral pallet.  Using nudes, light pinks and browns are really the easiest colors to use Wet n’ Wild has some beautifully pigmented pallets that come in beautiful colors.  I am also so happy to start seeing the “nude” pallets popping up in a bunch of drug store lines.  I am so in love with the Naked pallets by Urban Decay but they are a little pricey.  The Covergirl as well as the Maybelline are great brands for shadows and have created some very affordable pallets.

I’m a girl who loves a good cat eye. But you can’t just use any eyeliner to achieve this beautiful look.  To get a really good cat eye you need a liquid liner.  Before my love affaire with my Lorac liner I used the Maybelline Eye Studio Master Precise liner pen.

Finally, to finish off the eyes, mascara is a must.  It’s really the one product that opens the eyes and gives you an awake look.  My go to mascara will always be the Maybelline Great lash.  That green and pink little miracle never lets me down.  Benefits They’re Real mascara is my favorite mascara but you don’t need to spend so much to get great long lashes.  I find myself grabbing this little guy before any other mascara.

drug store lipstick

Lips lips lips.  As you know I am a lipstick addict (Hi, my name is Jessa). Although I am obsessed with MAC lipsticks I have found that Revlon Super Lustrous and Maybelline Color Sensation really give you the most bang for your buck when it comes to drugstore lip colors.  I mentioned the Revlon Black Cherry as one of my favorite Winter lip colors.  They are very pigmented and last quite a long time.  If I’m going to go checkout the drug store lip colors these are the only two I look at. If lipsticks really aren’t your cup of tea but you are looking for a little wash of color I would have to suggest the Maybelline Baby Lips lip balms.  They are so hydrating and have a bunch of beautiful colors.

What are your beauty basics?  What drugstore products do you live for?
