One thing I definitely take a lot of pride in is my hair. I take really good care of it and love learning on how to make it stronger healthier and the color I want. So here are a couple tips I have found that works for my hair I am in no way a licensed cosmetologist nor have I taken any classes on the subject.
My first tip would have to find a great hairdresser, ask your friends for suggestions and shop around. I love the girl who does my hair, she’s personable and really listens to what I want and knows my personal style to make sure she gives me the right cut and color. I think how you mesh with the person is key to a great relationship and amazing style. My other tip related to this, always bring pictures of cuts and colors you like. Even if it’s just a fraction of a shade different from what I currently have I will still bring it in, I would also say having 3 to 5 images is a great way to make sure you are giving your stylist the best idea of what your goals are.
Second, remember your hair won’t look exactly the same as your pictures you bring in. This is also something serious to keep in the back of your mind. The makeup of your hair, the undertones in your hair and texture of your hair may be completely different from the person’s in your inspiration images.
Next, something I get asked a lot is if the color of my hair is natural. My response is always “Yes, and that I use blue shampoo to keep it this tone. Color toning shampoo has seriously changed my life. I started with using purple shampoo not this is more than just those “for blonde shampoos” this shampoo is actually a deep purple tone. My tip for this is to pick a shampoo with the darkest color to it you will get the best results. But because my hair is a darker blonde color I am now using a blue shampoo and it is magical. What purple and blue shampoos do is they cool down the brassy, yellow or red tones in your hair. So if in your inspiration photos the model has really steely or cool toned hair this is your savior to getting (and keeping) a similar shade.
To also keep my hair long healthy and shiny I love using hair masks. I wash my hair one to two times a week and I make sure that one of those times I use a hair mask to condition my hair. Instead of using a regular shampoo I will run a mask through my hair, leave it on for about 5 to 10 minutes while I do whatever else in the shower and then I’ll rinse it out. Currently, I love the SheaMoisture Strength, Grow & Restore mask it smells amazing and leaves my hair soft and shiny. The other thing I wish I had paid attention to sooner is heat protecting sprays and creams. I am crazy about prepping my hair whenever I use any kind of heat on my hair. Right now I use a couple different products that have protectant in their formulas like Hot Toddy by DryBar, Whole Blends 5-in-1 Lightweight Spray and Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle.
My final tip is to listen to your hair and when it needs to be washed, I’m lucky and my hair doesn’t get greasy too quickly so I can get away with washing it once a week, but if you workout every day or get really sweaty it’s ok to shower a little more frequently. I don’t suggest washing your hair more than every other day. Instead of washing my hair and I’m sure you know where I’m going with this, I use dry shampoo. Seriously, whoever created essentially baby powder in an aerosol bottle is a genius because there are so many amazing formulas out there for every hair type. I swear by dry shampoo because it absorbs all the extra oil in your hair will allowing your hair to produce its natural oils.
