Trips to the pool, the beach and even days out in the summer can all damage your hair. Summer is a season that is especially hard on your hair. To make sure you are protecting your locks from all the damage that can be done make sure you follow these simple tips.
Detangling Brush
A trip to the pool comes with instant knots, instead of tugging at your hair and damaging the ends get yourself a wet brush. I did not understand the hype until I got my Tangle Teezer and it has honestly changed the game. Designed to have flexible bristles to easily pull through knots. The Tangle Teezer also fits so nicely in any bag to take with you on the go. I don’t go to the pool or beach without it. The Chlorine can also damage your hair and create knots so along with my detangling brush if I’m going swimming I always bring a detangling spray. My recent go to is the Beauty Protector Protect and Detangle spray not only does it make detangling easy but it also has a UV and color protection built right in.
Protect Your Scalp
When spending the day out in the sun you know to apply sunscreen to your skin to protect it from the sun, but so many of us forget to protect our hair and scalp. For a trip to the beach don’t forget to spray on a UV protection, like Beauty Protector or something for my blondies out there the Oribe Run Through Detangling Primer. If you know you’re going to be out in the sun for a while it’s also wise to bring along a big hat. Kill two birds with one stone by protecting your hair scalp and face with a chic beach hat. Another trend I have been loving is wrapping a scarf around my hair.
Deep Condition
Along with sun and heat protection, the heat of a day out at the beach or in the sun can also be incredibly drying on your hair so make sure to give your hair a deep condition with a hair mask once a week. I don’t wash my hair often but once a week instead of using my regular conditioner I will use a hair mask. Simply wash your hair with your regular shampoo and then run a mask through your hair. I finish my shower and right before I get out I rinse out the mask. I have been loving the Living Proof Restore Mask Treatment and the Ouai Treatment Mask that come in individual packs that are great for your next vacation.
Sulfate-Free Shampoo
This isn’t a new idea but make sure you’re reading the labels on your shampoo bottle to make sure it’s sulfate free. Sulfates are what make most shampoos lather but they are harmful chemicals that you really don’t want on your hair. They can damage your hair and even make your color fade faster. To keep my hair the shade I want I love using a purple or blue toning shampoo, my go to right now is the Joico line which is also Sulfate-Free!
Sleep Braids
Finally, summer is the season to give your curling iron a much-needed break. Instead of curling, those perfectly tousled beach waves with heat use sleep braids as a healthier alternative. I like to take my shower before bed, spray a texture spray into my damp hair and I will french braid my hair into two braids. In the morning take the braids out and get the perfect been at the beach waves.
