I feel like autumn in Chicago has been in this very weird and chilly limbo, it hasn’t quite felt like fall. But yesterday on my walk home I finally noticed that the trees on my street are finally turning those beautiful yellow and orange colors. Because it’s been so gloomy and cold lately and then often times warms up a bit in the afternoon when I’m heading home layering has been a lifesaver. So these are a few of my favorite ways to layer this season.

Chunky Roll Neck Sweater and a Trench
Who doesn’t love a good chunky sweater? Lately, it has been extra gloomy and chilly so the first thing I’ve been reaching for

Sweater Over a Maxi
I have so many beautiful maxi dresses that I wear all summer long but when it gets colder it becomes harder and harder to keep them in rotation. So that’s why I love throwing a chunky cropped sweater over my dresses for a cozy feminine look.

Skirt Over a Dress the Same Length
not only will this give your skirts a bit more warmth but it also gives you a new way to style your closet. Throw a silk slip dress under a midi leather skirt for a sophisticated evening look or a sweater dress under a maxi skirt for something a little cozier.

Button Down Dress Over Pants
Another way to transform pieces in your closet into a something brand new is to pair it with something you wouldn’t typically. I love wearing my favorite button down dresses open as a duster jacket with a pair of jeans.

Sweater Dress Over a Button Down
This might be my favorite layering style. I love a good sweater dress and right now they are definitely all the rage on ASOS and Revolve. I love pairing them with a simple button down for a more put together and preppy look, throw on a pair of tights or knee-high boots for a really trendy outfit.

Scarves
Of course a post about layering I can’t forget to mention one of my favorite accessories, my beautiful Burberry scarf. , is honest the best winter investment pieces. I wear it with literally everything. Throw on a big blanket scarf or a long cashmere scarf to give any outfit a quick and easy bit of warmth.
Shorts and Tights
Finally, don’t retire the shorts just yet simply throw on a pair of tights to make them fall friendly. I love pairing my leather shorts with a pair of boots and a sweater for the perfect fall uniform.
